Sophomores attending Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey passed the time Friday evening – not hitting the movie theater or driving around listening to the latest music sensations – but meeting together to kick-off their magazine recycling project and brainstorming ideas to begin their efforts to collect and bundle magazines for donation to those in need.
Erin Maloney organized the team that includes fellow students Liz O’Donnell, Caroline Bottega, and Allison Safranek. MagazineLiteracy.org founder John Mennell spoke to the team via teleconference to thank them for their leadership and to underscore the impact they will have, especially by setting a positive example for other volunteer efforts from coast to coast. Then the sorting and bundling began!
The team spent the remainder of the evening thinking of the best ways they could start to collect magazines locally to be donated to new readers.
All the young women agreed that the Magazine Literacy project is a “great service opportunity to help people less fortunate who love to read and those who are just learning.” Erin would like to get more of her friends involved in the project to help with the organization’s goal of filling the literacy pipeline.
