Touching tens of millions of Americans and billions worldwide, poverty is big – but we can be bigger. The solution is disarmingly simple: feed people and teach them to read – one person, one family, one reader at a time. As a good friend – Kathleen DiChiara founder of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey likes to say (she started to feed hungry neighbors out of the 20 square foot trunk of her car and recently gave me tour of her 285,000 square-foot food bank in a golf cart): – FIO – figure it out.
There is an age old question: To help a hungry person, should you give them a fish, or teach them to fish. It’s a fool’s question. The answer is both – you need to feed a person, so they have the strength to learn to fish. Feed them and then teach them to read.
The longest journeys to the greatest places happen one step at a time, but you need to take a first step, then another to get there.
