Gearing Up for Literacy – Flux Moped Powers Magazine Drive for At-Risk Readers

“This drive will put the magazines we love so much into the hands, homes, and hearts of children, teens, and families, inspiring a new generation of young people to think about all the ways they can be a positive force in the world,” said John Mennell, founder of MagazineLiteracy.org. “Matt and his team have designed and filled a showroom with 100% electric mopeds – they are quintessential entrepreneurs – innovators who grew up reading magazines and dreaming about how they could make their mark in the world,“ he added.
“With the United Nation’s International Literacy Day and MagazineLiteracy’s 10th birthday on September 8th, the timing for giving magazine gifts for literacy could not be better,” said Flux Mopeds co-founder Matt Brueggeman. “Flux is celebrating delivery of their new 2014 100% electric moped models that will draw people and magazines to our store” he added.
“There are over 1,000 homeless students in Madison and a million, nationwide,” said Mennell. “The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended immunizing kids against illiteracy. Reading is Fundamental says that two-thirds of the 16 million children in poverty have no books at home. The reason the Flux Moped recycled magazine drive is so powerful is because ‘active lifestyle enthusiasts’ are recycling the magazines they love to share with and inspire new readers – teens and adults in mentoring and job training programs.” he added.

MagazineLiteracy.org has also partnered with the Kitchen Gallery in Madison, and Hearst and Conde Nast to collect culinary magazines for chef job training and family nutrition programs at foodbanks, and with 100state, Shine United, Widen, It’s a Habit (Sammy the Rabbit), Method Home ProductsSappi paper, and other businesses for magazine collections.

Realizing a long-time dream to marry the magazine publishing supply chain – from printer to consumer – with the vast nationwide hunger relief supply chain, and with support from companies like Greg Barber, Quint & Quint, Automattic, Bendyworks, TruScribe, Issuu, Urban Land Interests, and Ryleco, MagazineLiteracy.org is delivering over 250,000 magazines from Fun for Kidz, Highlights for Children, Cobblestone/Cricket, Conde Nast, Hearst, Active Interest Media, and National Geographic straight to foodbanks, such as the Community Food Bank of New Jersey and Long Island Cares, and other programs for delivery to at-risk readers served by food pantries, homeless and domestic violence shelters, mentoring and job training programs and foster care.

Earlier this year, in partnership with Mid-Range, Owl Kids, Purolator, and the Duffy family and schools in Canada, MagazineLiteracy sent 2,000 magazines to Inuit children and families north of the Arctic Circle. Teams are forming to recycle magazines for literacy coast to coast and around the globe.

MagazineLiteracy.org is the first and only global, magazine industry-wide literacy campaign that gets new and recycled magazines to at-risk children and families via literacy programs, with community volunteers and crowdfunded by consumers and businesses via the online Magazine Literacy Marketplace.
