12 million children. Twelve million kids don’t own a single book in their house, and that’s only in the United States.
When the founder of this program, John Mennell, told me and the other volunteers just how many people don’t have the privilege of books, I felt determined. Determined to change that number of kids and people.
On Saturday and Sunday my family and I, and a few others volunteered to help organize magazines, count inventory, and more. There was supposed to be an open house where agencies would come and get magazines but unfortunately no agencies arrived. Even though what we had planned for the two days didn’t really go as planned, I think I speak for all the volunteers when I say that the experience we had was the best we could have asked for under the circumstances. So when John asked me if I could write a short blog about my weekend volunteering, I felt honored to.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this blog about the Magazine Literacy Program, since many people don’t have the resources to.
